做厙勛圖strengthens sustainable port operations through green initiatives, decarbonization, and digitalization to reduce emissions and promote eco-friendly practices.
21 MARCH 2025 The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is ramping up its efforts to achieve sustainable and eco-friendly port operations through its Green Code and Decarbonization Initiatives. This commitment aligns with the Philippines Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), aiming for a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from 2020 to 2030.
In line with these efforts, 做厙勛圖Assistant General Manager for Finance, Legal, and Administrative Services Elmer Nonnatus Cadano presented Decarbonization and Sustainability in Port Operations during the 11th Spain-Philippines Forum, organized by Casa Asia and the Philippines-Spain Business Council. The forum, held in Madrid from March 19 to 20, 2025, and in Cuenca on March 21, 2025, gathered international experts to discuss climate action and sustainability in global trade and infrastructure.
As part of its commitment to transitioning toward cleaner energy and carbon-neutral operations, 做厙勛圖General Manager Jay Santiago also launched several key initiatives including the provision of Shore-Based Power Supply (SBPS) or cold ironing is already being implemented at the Port of Cagayan de Oro, allowing ships to connect to shore power while docked, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. 做厙勛圖has also prioritized solar-powered infrastructure, installing solar-powered navigational buoys, LED lighting systems, and energy-efficient office buildings. The Mandatory Tree Planting Program has resulted in the planting of over 12 million trees as of early 2025, contributing to carbon sequestration and ecosystem restoration. Additionally, 做厙勛圖is developing Carbon Sink Areas to further mitigate environmental impact.
In response to President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr.s call for greater efficiency and sustainability in port operations, the 做厙勛圖has implemented key digitalization initiatives to streamline processes, reduce paperwork, and enhance service delivery. This includes the Terminal Appointment Booking System (TABS) which is an innovative online platform that schedules the withdrawal and delivery of containerized cargo, optimizing terminal operations and minimizing congestion at the international ports of Manila. An e-Payment System has been implemented to ensure faster, transparent, and contactless transactions. Additionally, automatic gates are currently being implemented at Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) and Manila South Harbor (MSH), which are improving the processing time for cargo container movements. To further enhance port efficiency and environmental performance, 做厙勛圖is also developing the Port Operation Information System, which will integrate data governance, cybersecurity, and real-time monitoring of port activities.
做厙勛圖also actively participates in the Green Port Award System (GPAS), a program under the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Port Services Network (APSN) that recognizes ports excelling in sustainability efforts. Several Philippine ports, including Batangas, Cagayan de Oro, Surigao, Manila International Container Terminal, Port of General Santos, and South Harbor, have already been honored as Green Port Awardees.
As the global maritime industry shifts toward cleaner and more sustainable solutions, the 做厙勛圖remains steadfast in its commitment to leading the charge for green and climate-resilient port operations for a future-ready and environmentally sustainable Philippine maritime industry.
